I'm interested in starting my first salt water tank. I saw a 40 gallon that looked nice for my apartment. The question I had was is 40 gallons big enough? What species work well with clown fish? Do Seahorses work with them? and how many fish can i have in a 40 gallon without it being too much?

First I welcome you to the fish channel forums. Glad you joined us. Second seahorses are a very slow moving and should not be with any thing that would compete for food. They will not fair well. As for clown fish they are not a good tank mate they are territorial. There are some shrimp that will go well like the bumble bee and the ghost. As for fish there are not to many. I believe there are a couple Dragonettes that are ok couple cardinals as well. Good luck and the best advice I can give you is have a lot of patients when it comes to a marine tank and research everything.

Not sure, but I think your primary goal is to keep clownfish? If so, a 40 gallon is plenty big and there are several species that will coexist with them well. First, what kind of clownfish do you want? Most people want the "Nemo" type which would be Perculas or ocellaris. Both are perfect for a 40, they stay pretty small and are not the more aggressive species of clowns. If this is the case, you are wide open to alot of the smaller reef fish. My personal favorite is the Flame hawkfish. they are small, hardy, brightly colored and have a great personality. Firefish are another good choice for a 40, I would suggest getting a pair if you choose them.

You could also try one of the easier dwarf angels like a Coral beauty, Flame Angel, Rusy Angel, or Cherub. Only one angel to a tank though. I would avoid any damsels other than Green chromis. They are very territorial and aggressive and may harm your clowns and other fish. Tangs should probly be avoided as well since they will outgrow a 40.

There are many others that I could suggest but you might want to just look up some of the smaller salt fish and ask us here about them.
