Trying to get him to get the SAE's. his tan k is a 30 gallon, and since my SAE's are about 6"-6.5" inches in length, he is reluctant to get them. Also suggested the Otocinclus. Which he is cinsidering. Expressed my concern about the chemical fix when he first told me about the problem. But he's hard headed and tells me he going to use it a little while longer.

SAE's are no where near that big. CAEs can be big, not Siamese. I've had mine for 9 months an they are about 2.5-3.0" long. I would do a little more research. Since they are hard to come by I would suggest cutting light and adding Iron first as that might be easier to complete. It's a long process. Took two full months before it went away for me.

| LOL! Caliswift when I first started seeing how big they had gotten, I did just that, researched. My surprize was I do in fact have true SAE's which according to the books do get to 6" inches in size. Boy was I surprized as I first thought I had flying fox's, but no, they are true SAE's. Mine unfortunately are Fat, Big, and LAZY! All they want to do is lay around and wait for food to drop. So thinking of firing them from their job and hiring some new ones, and see if they will do the job they were hired for. LOL But you are very right, some LFS do sell fish they say are SAE's only for the customer to find out later they are Flying Fox's, or another type of SAE. And Caliswift thank you so much for mentioning that, as I'm sure some folks would have over-looked that very thought.

princessotfu (9/26/2011) Caliswift, I don't think that's otos, I think that's plecos. Some plecos that don't have an adequate food source will go after the slime coat of other fish. I've seen goldfish that got the bad end of a pleco encounter. It's not pretty.
As well my experience has been with plecos and plants... If the pleco is a true algae eating Pleco... When the algae runs out or doesn't for that matter... They will DESTROY plants... Which is why my Discus tank once again has plastic plants in it; for now... My Snake skin Pleco just ate my plants up... I tried everything... Zucchini slices; (many of them) the second he new they were in the tank... he would gorge himself... I would check the next day and nothing left but rock and rubber band...

| I feel for you Sick-Lids! I've been lucky so far as I have four Pelco's in my tank, two yellow bristle-nosed Pelco's, and two Long finned Pelco's. I might be getting lucky though as I also have two medium piece's of Mopani driftwood in there for them to chew on. I have lost a few plants in the past. But thank God so far, My tank hasn't been devastated by them so far. One of the problems in my tank, is that it is moderately planted and I know I put ten Otocinclus in there, but since I got them about 3 months ago, to this day when I try to do a head count, I can only find on a good day, seven out of ten, usually it's only five out of ten. It's starting to drive me crazy!!! LOL They were little guys when I got them, so they might have been a tasty treat for one of my Discus The other problem in my tank, is I keep the PH at 6.0 for discus, and the water temp at 84 Degrees. I learned the hard way when I decided to do a Discus tank about plants and warm water. Lost a whole bunch of plants due to the then existing plants not being able to handle both the PH and the water temp. But since the $100.00 dollar plant bail-out I did. I researched what plants would handle my wattage for lighting, the PH, and the temp. It's been good so far, but with "murphy's Law" always lurking around the corner, well....you just don't know when things could take a turn for the worst!

One thing that seems to work is Flourish Excel. I had bad black beard algae in my 30 gallon, I dosed Excel at triple strength, in less than a week, all the algae turned red, then died.
Unfortunately, so did all the plants that resemble grass. Vallisnerias, sagittarias, echinodorus tenellus, eleocharis acicularis and some crypts. (Actually, many of the plants didn't die, and in a few weeks began to show new growth, but some of them are gone forever.)
After a while, the algae will come back unless the problem is fixed. In my case, I believe my phosphates were too high in the water, which caused the algae to flourish. I have not had the same problem after I lowered the phosphates.
But, and I am not trying to put in a cheap plug for Siamese Algae eaters (Crossocheilus siamensis), when I got these guys, they have eaten all the black beard algae, and continue to do so. In have 4 of these guys in my 125 gallon (and yes, they do get 6") show tank, and I will purposefully add black beard algae infested plants to that tank so they will eat the algae. I have at least one in my other tanks. They have their drawbacks, but they are completely useful. When they get too big, I can usually trade them for smaller ones.
Also, take out and clean the algae off of anything that you can. Make sure to clean the filter intake pipes regularly, clean any rocks and driftwood as often as needed, and any air lines that are infested. If you don't allow any extra of the little buggers to live, they will slowly disappear. Good Luck!

Thanks for the input KD! He's been doing that. He wont tell me what his water conditions are.. Kind of stubborn, complains I'm hounding him about his tank! Which I actually am! Don't want to see him fall away from the hobby or loose his fish, due to discouragement. Heck he just turned 28 today.

| Well my son has decided that in the next week he is tearing his tank down. All his plants are covered in algae, and his back glass is so bad with it, a normal scraper won't even get through it. So gonna have to tear it down get rid of all his plants, driftwood, scrape the glass with razor blades, and start all over. I told him he might try scrubbing and then boiling his driftwood to see if that will get rid of it on it. To me this is what happens when you neglect a problem for too long, But again I am no EXPERT! I do know he's running a coralife light hood, 130 watt, Compact florescent with 10000k bulbs instead of 6500k bulbs. I've offered to help him with the cleanup if he wants me to, but he hasn't said either way..
