| Right now I have 1 guppy all alone i a ten gallon. I used to have 2 goldfish from a fair my brothers gave me, but I gave them to my lfs since they aren't for tropical tanks. I've been thinking of some glofish along with one or two more guppies and/or platies. I'm also in the process of getting some anubias plants/hornwart. My water parameters are GH-180; KH-240; PH-7.5-8.0; NO2-0; NO3-20-40. My wattage is 1.5 wpg. MY temp is around 80. Do glofish go well with guppies/ platties. Do glofish go well in my water parameters (which includes extremely hard water)? Is my lighting okay or do I need to get stronger/fluorescent lighting? Thanks a lot!!!!

The plants should do fine in your water. I personal would not buy glowfish. From what I understand these fish are treated with a chemical to make them glow under UV light. Plus you are paying extra money just for this reason. Why don't you just look into getting some fancy tail guppies. I have a friend who breeds them for a living. They will also have lots of little ones down the road. Then you can share some of the little ones with your friends.

try not to get as many females as males try a ratio of 1 female for every 2 males but be ready for a place to give some away because they will overpopulate your tank pretty fast. I agree with findingjohn about the glofish they are unnatrually made that way. in a ten gallon I would just go with guppies because platies will overpopulate the tank just as fast. or you could get some cherry shrimp with something like bororas brigittae or ember tetras would look really cool.

I would keep an eye on those guppies because one female to two males can be dangerous because the males might try to kill each other and harass the female(s).
55 gallon
13 zebra danios (adult)
2 harlequin rasboras
2 assassin snails
2 spotted danios
20 gallon
2 white cloud minnows
4 zebra danios (fry)
6 gallon
? snails
2.5 gallon: 3-5 unknown fry
bucket: zebra danio fry

"From what I understand these fish are treated with a chemical to make them glow under UV light" -
Actually, Glofish are genetically modified zebra danios. They have a jellyfish or coral gene (depending on the colour) that causes them to fluoresce under blue light. I think that regular danios are just as nice, though.

| Thanks for all the great info. I went to petsmart and $4.99 a glofish is expensive. I don't even think I could get the right lighting. I actually just got 2 new fancy guppies (now all 3 are males) and 2 balloon-bellies mollies. Just to check: this is a good setup, right? Because maybe next week or earlier I"m going to get a couple anubias or hornwart. And maybe 2 platies. These are all hardy specimens, so I think I'll be good. I just don't want to overstock my ten-gallon. (Hoping to get a 20-g for Christmas!!)

If you had an opposite-sex pair of platies, the male would bother the female all the time. Perhaps two females?
I wonder about the all-male group of guppies, as well. I've never kept all males so I don't know how aggressive they'd be towards each other without competition for mates.

| Okay. Petsmart only sells all males and my lfs doesn't have the greatest selection in guppies, but they seem to be getting along. Thanks for the great info.
