I was at my LFS and I saw more of those green algae-covered ball thingys and I'm wondering what exactly that is, and if I can get the stuff to spread off the ball and onto the substrate to create a carpet like in dutch-style aquariums?

Most of the ones I've seen have been Java Moss Balls.

They are a real algae -- Cladophora -- and they come from lakes where they roll around at the shore. You can't break them apart and have them cover the substrate, as they want to make balls.

Alright, good to know. That being said, what is there in the moss department- that isn't known as an aquarium pest- that I can create a carpet? I don't have the right tanks or space or soil or anything to make a "dry-start method" tank...

Okay wait scratch that- I'm looking it up some more on this and I'm seeing people's planted tanks with Lava Rocks covered in the Java moss... So one guy says he just plucked it and put in on the rock and held it down with a pebble or two... are there other ways to get the moss than in "ball-form?" haha

There are not many fish that I know will eat the true algae balls.

The way to get moss to grow on a rock or driftwood is to wrap it with black cotton thread -- has to be cotton, so it will dissolve over time.

You might want to contact 'Princessotfu' on this forum and see if she will re-post a photo showing her carpet of Java Fern.  It was simply sensational and might just be what you are looking for.  SGN

Java fern is amazingly hardy. I have a tank with only one catfish and some java fern in it. The light is almost always off to due the low lightning preference of the catfish and the java fern has oxygen bubbles on the undersides of its leaves.
