I got a fiddler crab two days ago and had some problems at first.  I had to make a cover for this 2.5g tank because the crab cralled out of the tank and wandered out into the grage for almost a whole day.  I got her from a store that kept her in a freshwater tank so im working on getting her back up to brackish.  I am feeding some invert food and am wondering what else i can feed, feeder fish maybe.  And can i keep any other things like hermit crabs with them?

Fiddlers are not aquatic crabs and it's their nature to spend as much time on land as possible. Build a vivarium similar to what you'd provide a semi-aquatic amphibian, with an inch or two brackish (~SG 1.010 at 25 C) or fully marine water, and the rest of the vivarium sand, rocks and bogwood roots. Use an undertank heater for warmth rather than a tropical aquarium-style heater. Secure the hood by using filter wool or plastic mesh to block any openings -- these crabs *will* escape through any hole they can get through.

Feeding is easy; in the wild they consume algae and decaying organic matter, and in the aquarium will eat wetted fish flake, algae wafers, minced seafood, and so on.

Fiddler crabs are not really compatible with anything much given their very particular needs. A male and several females will coexist, but males can and do fight. Other crabs will fight with them too, usually killing the physically weak fiddlers (the giant claw is basically for show and almost useless for actual fighting).

Cheers, Neale

Thanks very much.  I am starting the tank to go more to the marine side (SG of 1.016 right now.)  I think im going to fill the tank completely and put an underwater lagoon thing in.  I think that it will be cool.  I bought 5 hermit crabs for him to eat/coexist with.  He is coexisting with them right now.  The hermit crabs only cost about $1.  To make the tank marine im thinking about taking some mollies and gradualy increase the SG, using the mollies to cycle the tank.  Any other advice would be helpfull.
