I have come into possession of a Fluval 205 canister filter (new) but I only have a 10 gallon tank. Would using this filter over-filter a small tank.

10 gallon
3 Emerald Corries
4 Tiger Barbs (LG)

For just fish, no. But for planted tanks, yes. Also, the water flow of the filter should be considered in a smaller tank. You don't want your fish being slammed around the tank in the currents.

Technically, no, you cannot over-filter an aquarium from the viewpoint of the nitrogen cycle. However, as Swarley said, there are other concerns to consider. For example, planted tanks often do better with less water flow so that carbon dioxide does not escape too quickly. Thus, if you could keep the flow rate down, you could add as much filtration to a planted tank as you wanted to. Further, as was mentioned, fish cannot live in a current that is too fast. For most normal species, a turnover rate of 10 is about the highest you would ever want to go (meaning that the flow rate per hour is ten times the size of the aquarium). For most applications, a turnover of about 5 is suitable for medium-sized tanks and large tanks can handle turnover rates as low as 2.5.

Might be time for a tank that can accommodate that Fluval.

That's the way I would see it.

But, I know my bettas are definitely the final and complete version.~
