Well I've had my aquarium set up for about two weeks...

I'm doing cyclying with fish... I'm doing 2-3 30% water changes per week during the cycle period... then will go to ever week to week and a half water changes for my discus tank after the initial cycle is done..

I've got good filtration, regular water changes, light feedings, etc..

My water is still cloudy.. It was really bad the first couple of days, but has seemed to have leveled off... Don't get me wrong...its not bad, its just kind of slightly milky looking...

I know what I did wrong, I didn't rinse the gravel...  Does anyone have any suggestions to this, or will regular water changes/gravel suctions eventually correct this problem over time?

My gravel is very very sandy gravel because I'm considering a fresh water stingray possibly at somepoint.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you so much.

Well, if it's cloudiness from the sand or particulate mixed in with the sand it will clear up in 24 to 72 hours. There are drops you can put in the water to make it clear up quicker. I hate that stuff and hate adding chemicals to my water but it's an option. It basically gets the particulate to stick to it and then sinks to the bottom. Here's an example: http://www.petco.com/product/105344/Aquarium-Products-Crystal-Clear-Water-Clarifier.aspx

If the cloudiness is caused by a bacterial bloom (common when cycling). Just keep doing water changes every day until it dies down. Maybe 10-20% a day or just keep up what you are doing.

If the cloudiness is caused by diatoms or algae in the water, I haven't had to deal with that. But I'm sure some articles can be found. My understanding is that this would not be "milky" but would be green to brown in color.

Hopefully this helps, it seems to be a fairly common thing to not worry about unless the fish you are cycling with are at the top gasping for air. If so, do a big water change as soon as you can.

FYI - Some people take issue when people mention cycling with fish. Hopefully they'll focus on helping you and not lecturing you on what you're doing.

I'm so upset..I don't know what to do.  I've reached the breaking point.

I'm currently (as we speak) draining the entire aquarium..to rinse the gravel..

I put half gravel in a 5 gallon buckett, and am rinsing it...but I have rinsed the gravel 15 times in the bucket...and its still cloudy???

What do I do

If you've rinsed the gravel that many times, then the problem is not the gravel. It's a new tank. Don't feed for a day or so, and just let it settle down. Tincture of time.

cloudiness happens when cycling a new tank, particularly with fish. It'll go away once the bacterial population has grown enough and stabilized.
