I recently bought a Pictus Catfish for my 60 gallon aquarium. I put him in my 20 gallon quarantine tank for a little over a week and recently moved him into my 60 gallon. He was very active in the quarantine tank and at the pet store. But now that he is in my 60 gallon, he just sits in the bottom corner between a plant and the corner of the tank. I tried moving all the decorations around but now he found another place to hide. Is this normal for pictus catfish? I heard they were very active and one of the least shy catfish species. (Mine is the smaller of the two species that have the common name pictus.)

60 gallon - 1 Buenos Aires, 9 Red Serpae, 6 Pristella & 2 Black Neon Tetras, 9 Longfin Blue Danios, 2 Julii Leopard Corys, 1 Rainbow Shark (6 inches, 8 years old), 1 Pictus Catfish (4.75 inches, 1 year old)
30 gallon - 2 Comet Goldfish (5.5 inches each, 10 years old), 1 Blue Lobster (3.5 inches, 1 year old)
20 gallon - 5 male MM Platies
5 gallon - 1 male Halfmoon Doubletail Betta

I had a Pictus and I will share some advice with you. It will take time for it to adjust to it's new much larger home. They are also very social fish. They prefer to be in groups of 3 or more but it will adjust to being by itself. They also prefer dimmer light so place some floating plants on top to give some shade. Hope this helps!!!

Fish are friends, not food!!

Ok. I'll wait it out and see how he does. I heard they liked to be in groups too but my tank isn't big enough for a bunch of them. I got him because I wanted another catfish (in addition to my cories) but something that would stay relatively small for a catfish. I read that this type of Pictus would be between 6 and 10 inches.
Anyway, my Pictus has now taken over the spot that my 6 inch rainbow shark has owned for the last 8 years. The Pictus can apparently fit in where my shark can't (so my shark can chase him out) and the shark doesn't like sharing his space I guess.

My pictus is still hiding after at least 2 months. He only comes out of "his" rock at feeding time.
I'm not sure what to do to make him more comfortable (other than buying him another pictus for the tank because I don't have room for two). There are plenty of hiding spaces and also swimming space. He's very active inside his rock. It has multiple holes and tunnels to hide in without coming out. So I know he isn't sick or lazy.

Of course not. He's a schooling species and you're keeping just a single specimen. He isn't going to settle down any time soon. Get six, and they'll be swimming about in the open all the time.

I know this is an old thread. I was wondering how it was doing. I have a four line pictus catfish that is 16 years old. Originally we had two but the other one died about 2 or 3 years after we got them. The one we still have is doing great. I agree that it is a schooling fish. Ours school with other catfish in our tank. We have Indian suncat and a lace catfish. Although the one catfish that was it's "best buddy" died a couple years ago that fish was 15 years old. It was a Schilbe intermedius (grass cutter) catfish.

He is doing good. He still hides a lot but comes out for feeding time. He's more than doubled in size since I got him and is close to five inches long. He and my rainbow shark (about 6 inches) get along great and swap hiding spots throughout the course of the day. I have still never seen the behaviors he had in the quarantine tank when he was by himself so it is a little disappointing. But he's is a fun addition to the tank none the less and a rare treat to see him swimming about.

That's awesome. My four line used to hide more but he's out all the time in his old age. I would just be on the look out as it grows with some of your smaller fish. like the neons and the danios. In the future it may start looking at them as snacks.

Yeah I had that in mind when I got him. The tetras and danios are all getting up there in age and I was planning on them dying of natural causes before my pictus is large enough to catch and eat them.
