I remember reading somewhere that Discus should not be kept in anything smaller than a 70 gallon tank and are happiest in groups of at least 6. "Gallons" can be so misleading! I have acquired a 95 gallon tank that has the dimensions os 36" long 24" wide and 25 inches deep. Would this be suitable to house a half dozen discus in a planted tank with some additional suitible tankmates (like neon tetras, some cats, ottos, sae's, and inverts)?

Thanks!

38 Gallon 36x12x19
Marineland C-220 with Filter-Max III prefilter on intake
Hydor 75watt Substrate heater
5 Otos
5 SAE's
3 Albino Cory's
3 Panda Cory's
4 Fancy Goldfish
4-54Watt T-5 HO fixture
3 Ozelot Swords
25 (last count) Tall Sagittaria subulata
35 (last count) Dwarf Sagittaria subulata
10 (Last Count) Sagittaria chilensis
3 Java Ferns
8 Cryptocoryne Wendtii Red
Ever expanding bunches of Anachris

I have a 65g(36Lx18Wx24H) and in it I have 6 discus,4 bolivian rams,13 rosy tetras,2 whiptail cats and 1 banjo cat all have been doing fine for yrs now. Your 95g will do fine as a discus tank.

Size of your tank is fine. I'm assuming it’s a Square tank and not wavy or corner?

Discus are middle swimmers and I wouldn't have a show discus tank with anything less than a 70 for their own comfort with other fish.

You mentioned Otto's and inverts and neon’s. You need to rethink your fish. Discus has very needy water requirements and higher temps than a Standard community tank. So either have a Community tank and leave out the Discus or have a Discus tank and choose your fish around the Discus.

Neons can't handle High Temps around 84 degrees so people choose Cardinal Tetra's instead. Inverts can be a little snippy with Discus because they are big I would hate to see a nice Discus have a chunk of fin taken out, discus are very slow peaceful fish.

6 Discus for a 95 is a good number but that depends on filtration. They won't handle Ammonia Spikes or poor water conditions. I have 4 Discus and some Schooling fish and that’s it for a 90 gallon.

My filtration is based on 4x. So I have a Marineland C-360 Canister Filter for a 90 Gallon. So 90 x 4 = 360 gallons per hour.

PH is not a big deal. However Discus, Cardinal Tetra’s, Rams are a lower PH range of fish. Keep this in mind when choosing fish for your Tank.

Thanks Guys! Matthew, I had not finished thinking out the fish yet because I was not planning to jump to Discus this soon. But I came accross this Glass cages tank at a good price so I grabbed it. The inverts I had in mind were shrimp to keep at the algae. Nothing big that would go after fish. I am grateful for your recommendations! What type of algae eaters would you recommend? I notice that you hace 2 angels. They are not aggressive towards the discus and gat along wel with them?

6 -8 seems about the most you could possibly want.

I'll go ahead and disagree with Mathew on the community aspect. I have a school of 6 SAEs in my tank with 9 discus as well as ~10 neons, 5 plecos, 2 humbird tetras and ~3 cory cats. The SAEs are a bit crazy if not fed regularly but otherwise all get along quite swimmingly (pun intended). I wouldn't go too far with the community idea due to the water temperature. I don't know why but there is a perception that Neons can't survive in a Discus tank. I can tell you that is categorically wrong.

Ottos and inverts I have no idea with. I guess it depends on the inverts.

I would make sure any discus you get are born in or acclimated to your local water type. Here's a response I gave on another thread:

I am running a 5 stage ro/di unit so does the local water statement still hold true?

By the way, aiming for 6X turnover on the 95 using a sump system.

I currently have a forty gallon planted running with 7 altum flora discus in it.
One is about 5" 2 at around 2.5" and 4 around 2.5" This has been running for about two years. Added the 2.5" on Saturday. If you keep a vigilant WC schedule According to the breeder change 25% every two days and they should last a long long live span. So your 90 should work great for 6 fish. The ph is 6.6 and the temp is at 82 F.

I don't think so. I would check the PH coming out and make sure you can get enough water at one time to do a large water change. You may want to consider the additives which make water more beneficial to discus. I only say this because your RO will remove a lot of trace elements. I don't have any personal experience with an RO though. From what I can gather RO water is the best, most consistent way to reduce PH. I'm jealous!

Your filtration seems fine to me. You can always adjust later.

Definitely planned on adding the proper trace elements. I do that now because the RO with the DI strips everything out. 99.99% pure H2O. I have it going in to 2 32 gallon rubbermaid roughneck trash cans as resevoirs (clean and never used for anything else of course!) so I should be fine on quantity.

Thanks!

I try and get water in my tank as Close to 0 TDS(total dissolved solids) the cleaner the better. Have you measured the water out of the tap to figure out what has to be done to the water before it goes in to your tank?
