| Hey Guys, So I have ich, eww right. Anyway, Its not getting any better. I read on another forum that I needed to boost the temp to 82 for 2 weeks, do every other day water changes and that should take care of it. Something about the free swimming stage not being able to handle the high temperatures. However, it seems to be getting worse. Should I be medicating with something or is this normal? Am I just worrying too much?

Raising the temp is a good 1st step. Keep the heat up for a good 10 days or at least three days after all signs of ich has diminished. You can also treat with aquarium salt (not marine salt) along with the heat. You can also go to your LFS and buy a medication for ich. Read the label and use as directed and remove your carbon when treating, the carbon will remove the medication. Don`t forget water changes. Best advice research on the net an ich treatment for your specific breed of fish.

| as he mentioned the heat is a good 1st step. but when you fish have Ich you need to medicate with salt or Ich medication and just not heat alone. however higher will help provent ich in the future. What temp do you keep your fish at normally and what kind of fish do you have? We'll be able to tell you how high to go. and depending on the fish you may be able to keep it at higher temps all the time.

| Your water needs to be considerably higher than 82F to kickstart the ich hatching cycle. There are many preparations out there for treating ich. Most of them contain a biological stain like methylene blue or malachite green. I would avoid anything with copper sulfate in it (this includes the "penny cure.") Now the bad news: Rummynose tetras are very sensitive to fish meds and even the stains will probably make them disoriented, unsteady swimming, and eventually kill them. I know on most medication labels it advises to use a half strength dose for tetras. But with rummys it's even worse. They just can't handle it. They can, however, tolerate fairly warm water 86 or even 88, and actually thrive in above 80s temps. If you're very lucky they may survive, but treat them separately from your other fish.

| I have a tank of about 60 Cards, 15 Rummy-nose, 10 Cories, Angels and other fish and didn't have any problem treating that tank for ich about a year ago. Did so with Quick Cure which is Formalin and Melachyte Blue based. Even though half-dosed, it still only took a little over a week of treating, going 1wk beyond the last sign. If you go the temp route you should get up to 88-89. This is the temp that it kills. It only takes temps in the 60s to get the reproduction going to about 4 days, 85 to get them to stop producing and 88-89 to kill them. I find this method takes a while to work and have never really liked it. I have read of too many people losing fish to ich, something I still haven't done, and I think it is because of the length of time it takes without a med. Just my opinion. I like natural methods, but for ich will never do anything other than dosing Quick Cure.

I completely agree about using Quick Cure (formalin and malachite green) for treating ich. It has been the industry standard for many years, and works well. Raising the temperature is NOT a good idea, since all it does is stress the fish already stressed by the ich. Just get some Quick Cure and follow the directions for use.
